Introduction
This presentation will present
the impetus and implementation of Oral Portfolios with beginning Spanish
students (Spanish 102). The purpose of Oral Portfolios, which are student-created
movies of themselves speaking Spanish, is to help students become more
conscious of their Spanish pronunciation and encourage them to improve
it. The students will use digital cameras checked out from the Media
Services department on campus, and then use iMovie to edit and produce
their films. We will present the project as a whole, including pedagogical
implications, process and support of the project by IT staff, and an
evaluation of the effectiveness of the activity with special emphasis
on pedagogical implications.
This presentation is for faculty and staff who are interested in new
ways to work with students on oral production and pronunciation of the
target language. It is also for those who are looking for new ways to
use digital video in their classes.
Below are some documents
that present the project syllabus, prior to implementation, some sample
videos and then a synopsis of the project results.
Project Syllabus
This project will consist of writing, producing and acting in three
short videos (3-5 minutes long) in groups of 3-5 students, dealing with
the topics studied in class and in the corresponding chapters of the
textbook. It should include some information about culture (check the
Enfoque Cultural section at the end of each chapter). The video production,
which will be done outside of class, could be a skit, a panel, an informal
discussion, a game show, a presentation or any other suitable format
for the presentation of the topic. The important component of the project
is to include as much of the vocabulary, grammar and culture learned
in class and the chapters assigned in the textbook and to improve your
Spanish pronunciation and fluency.
You may not read the dialogue
or narration during the taping of the video. Instead, the dialogue/narration/presentation
must be spontaneous or from memory. The class will see the videos on
the due dates.
- 3-5 students in each group
which will work together throughout the whole term
- 3 video projects. Each
one due on specific dates (usually one every two weeks). See Plan
de clase.
- Final project: One edited
version of the 3 videos plus a short written essay in Spanish on the
experience.
Each student will write his
or her own essay.
The evaluation of each project will include:
- Pronunciation (individual)
- Grammar, vocabulary and
cultural component (individual)
- Fluency (individual)
- Preparation and content
(collaborative)
The goal of the project is to obtain samples of spoken Spanish from
the beginning of the term until the end. Each student will be able to
manage and work individually in the progression of his/her learning.
Even though the project is collaborative, your responsibility with pronunciation,
grammar correctness and culture is individual.
This project will not only enhance your learning process but it will
also prepare you to utilize the technology to produce video portfolios.
