Viewing Calculated Motions

Notice that both of these mechansims constitute a twisting motion when viewed with the oxygen atoms in an eclipsed orientation.
For the Bailar twist, three oxygen atoms all on different ligands (in a facial orientation) twist in the same direction while the oxygen atoms on the opposite face twist in the opposite direction.
In contrast, in the Rây-Dutt Mechanism, two oxyen atoms on one ligand and one oxygen atom on a second ligand twist in one direction, while the two oxygen atoms on the third ligand and the remaining oxygen atom on the second ligand twist in the oppositve direction.
