Evening Sunday May 14th (Blackberry e-mail from Ron that gives the time as 8:16pm, but it is 7:59 pm in CDT and 5:59 pm in California), says "We are getting to San Diego now. All is well except for a funky auto pilot."
Monday Morning May 15th (cell phone communication with the crew at 6am in CA). The crew of Pangea spent the night in San Diego. The problem of the "funky auto pilot" was a result of stashing two metal objects too close to the magnetic flux detector of the auto pilot.
Message from the Pangea: Monday May 15th from Myia: "Ron requested I send out message #1 to all of you letting you know that boat and crew departed from San Diego Harbor this morning (Monday) at 6:30am (PDT). With minor repair of the auto pilot in the harbor last night everything is well on the boat and the crew is off and on their way!! They expect to arrive in Guadeloupe Island in 36 hours which will put them there at 6:00pm Tuesday night. Conditions are great, cool and clammy and they can't wait to get to Hawaii!! "
Message from the Pangea: Tuesday May 16th from Myia: "I talked to Ron today at approximately 3:00pm (PDT). He said they were currently enjoying NO wind and had lake like conditions. They were 43 N of Guadeloupe Island and plan to be on land late tonight. They caught one fish yesterday and ate it last night. Ron said there is nothing quiet like REALLY fresh fish. When I asked if they ate it "sushi style" he said NO they cooked it but the next one they may serve up raw."
Message from the Pangea from Myia: "On Wednesday May 17th the Pangea left S. Guadeloupe Island at 16:10 (PDT) with 7.5 knots of great wind speed. The crew is doing fine.....they are heading to HI!! They have come to the conclusion that there is NO TURNING BACK NOW!!"
Message from the Pangea: (from Marion Cass, alias Mitty) on Friday May 19th. "I received a call from the Pangea around 8 pm (CDT) with an update (however humorously mostly to order extra parts). The Location of the Pangea is N 27o 5' and W 123o 3'. They have had great weather and very favorable winds with a smooth afternoon and evening. They hit a record boat speed today of 8.5 knots. Last night it became very calm during the night and they woke to a beautiful warm T-shirts and shorts day. They took a mid-ocean swim and according to one crew member "Captain Ahab Ritter had us scrubbing the underneath of the boat". They are getting better at using the sextant that Steve brought and today they found their latitude within 5 miles of that output on the GPS, "we haven't quite figured out how to get our longitude yet however". This evening they are under conditions of smooth sailing and getting ready to eat Pasta Putenesca. Best wishes to all.”
Message from the Pangea (Sunday May 21 st ) from Mitty: I received a call from the Pangea at 8:15 pm (CDT): Coordinates: N 25o26' W126o04', they have traveled 800 miles. The crew of the Pangea report great sailing and good winds in “every sort of weather”. Right now they are sailing up-wind in “a perhaps never yet reported counter current west-to-east wind running against the trade winds”. At the moment of the call, they were sailing southwest against a 25 mph wind. They say they have used every type of foresail over the last few days from the Genoa to the Stay Sail. “Hopefully we will get winds out of the north tomorrow and will get into the Trades. It has been pretty slow”. Yesterday was quite warm but a cold front came through in the middle of the night (last night), so it is cool but the ocean temperature is fairly warm (68oF). They have seen flying fish. Ed says “everyone is having a great time although service on the sun deck is rather poor.” They report that everyone is in great spirits.
Message from the Pangea; Monday May 22nd from Myia.."I talked to Ron today and he said they are headed south after resting last night. Their course is 220 heading towards HI. Hoping for trade wind at 23 degrees N. where they expect much improved sailing. Weather is warm and sunny with clam seas and light winds. Crew remains in good spirits even thought they have not caught any more fish!!"
Message from the Pangea: Tues May 23rd from Myia "We continue our course south west towards the Mystical Trades. We are currently 23 degrees 41 going 9 minutes north 128 degrees 20 minutes south west. After a day of quiet and motoring we may have FINALLY found a good north east wind moving along at 4.5 knots steadily. Steve distinguished himself by swimming faster then the boat at one point today. We are watching movies, everyone seems happy and laundry was cleaned today."
Message from the Pangea: Wed May 24th from Myia "The coordinates are N. 22 degrees 38 minutes, W. 130 degrees 9 minutes. All day was spent traveling in perfect trade winds of 15 to 25 knots Jiv Polvault and traveling at 7+ knots straights to Hawaii. There was to much wind today for Steve to out swim the boat. And on a side note....... Ron wanted you to know that they had homemade pizza. While on the phone I heard a voice in the background say "Hey Ron, heavy stuff coming up on the rear" meaning they are expecting a storm."
Message from the Pangea: Thursday May 25th from Myia (about 2:30 PDT) "The coordinates for today are N. 22 degrees 21 minutes and W. 132 degrees 37 minutes. They are currently in 25 knot trade winds with a new record boat speed of 9.85 knots. DEFINITELY FASTER THEN STEVE CAN SWIM!! It is going well, everyone is in good shape and they are planning cocktail parties upon arrival."
Message from the Pangea on Friday May 26th from Myia: "Coordinates are N. 22 degrees 04.2 minutes, W. 135 degrees 16.9 minutes. We continue on the express ride of the trade winds with 165 miles covered yesterday and another new boat speed record of 9.92 done by crew member Longen in the dark. One ship in site on it's way to Yokohama otherwise we have the neighborhood to ourselves. We expect to be within land site of Hawaii in less then 7 days."
Message from the Pangea (from Mitty) Sunday May 28th 8pm (CDT)
"Our location is N 21o03' W 141o04min. We are 863 miles from Hawaii (estimated to arrive on Saturday if the winds continue favorably). We have had 3 days of 160 miles/day traveled. We are making great time now. We caught some flying fish on board (or shall we say the flying fish took a wrong turn) and sighted some white tailed tropical birds (with very long white tails). We are eating well, had homemade bread today. A tropical storm is building to the SE of us but it is pretty far away. People are doing well. The winds are very favorable (20-25 mph out of the NE). We want to send our personal thanks to Tony deWitte for the weather updates that have been aiding our navigation. Please give everyone our best for the Memorial Day Weekend."
Message from the Pangea (from Myia) Tuesday May 30th: " The position is 21 degrees 20 N., 146 degrees 12 minutes W. with 575 miles to go to Hawaii. We have had an incredibly beautiful day of lazy sailing in light trade winds. The crew is catching up on much needed reading and sleep and beginning to plan for their arrival in Hawaii."
Message from the Pangea (from Myia) Wednesday May 31st:. "Their position is 21 degrees 23 minutes N., 148 degrees 40 minutes W. Currently 436 miles from Hawaii. Beginning to see evidence of land of that based on the following 3 reasons:
A) Receiving the NLAA weather radio report based in Hawaii.
B) Increasingly warm weather and warm water.
C) Large amounts of debris in the water mainly trash. Proven by todays large fish catch which was a MILK CRATE successfully landed after 30 minutes of fighting by Steve.
Otherwise light trade winds continue. Everybody is eagerly awaiting land fall and we wish we caught a fresh fish."
Message from the Pangea (from Myia) Thursday June 1st: "I talked to Ron today at about 2:30pm PDT. Their position was 21 degrees, 13 minutes N., 150 degrees, 54 minutes W. and they are 310 miles from Maui. They have had absolutely beautiful trade wind sailing with a evening sky that looks like it came from the Dream Works movie trailer. No more fish but an extremely large shooting star was reported on the midnight watch. Looks like they will see land very late tomorrow and be into Honolulu early Sunday morning. NOTE: At the time I was talking to Ron he seemed to think Steve had caught ANOTHER piece of sea trash but said Steve was to afraid to go to the back of the boat and check it out."
Message from the Pangea (from Myia) Friday June 2nd: "The Pangea is 21 degrees N. 153 degrees 20min W. They are 124 miles from land. They have diverted to Hilo harbor on the big island to relieve Pete and Ed. Pete and Ed will be leaving the boat there and flying through to Hawaii. The rest of the crew will be departing Hilo immediately and sailing on around Hawaii and Maui to Honolulu. They expect to arrive on Sunday. They currently have good weather, plenty of wind has returned and the boat is looking forward to seeing a volcano later today!!"
