This worksheet is based on the reading assignment 02MIDIPerformance.

Browser Compatibility

There are quicktime sound files on this web page. On my mac Safari and Firefox play the sounds fine. Google Chrome which is now my preferred browser does not. If you're using Chrome and the sounds are not working try a different browser.

Assignment

There are eight musical phrases listed below, each with an mp3 sound file. Each phrase has the same melody, but uses different articulation patterns. Your assignment is to create the sound of each example in MIDI by altering note durations and velocities.

The tempo is 120.

Worksheet Setup

Create a new Excel spreadsheet with eight tabs. Save the worksheet as: 02Work3-FirstNameLastName.xls. Label the eight worksheet tabs as shown.

Create the header row "time status data1 data2" in the first row.

Listen to the mp3 version of Example 1. Create the MIDI version in Excel tab 02Work3-1 and play it in MIDIDisplay. Modify the notes in either Excel or MIDIDisplay until you're satisfied that the mp3 and the MIDI version are as similar as you can make them.

IMPORTANT: Even though the final tempo is 120, enter all notes in Excel at a tempo of 60.

Example 1. Legato

The tempo is 120.

Copy and Paste

Copy and paste the contents of worksheet 02Work3-1 into each of the remaining 7 worksheets.
