The melody has a total of fourteen notes.
Listen to the melody until you can write down the order of all fourteen notes using pitches n1 to n6.
Identify which notes are short notes and which notes are long notes.
We can assign n1 (the first note of the melody) to any line or space.
Once n1 is assigned to a specific line or space, the remaining notes fall on consecutive ascending lines and spaces.
If n1 is assigned to Line 2, then the remaining notes are assigned as follows.
Note | Line or Space |
n6 |
S4 |
n5 | L4 |
n4 | S3 |
n3 | L3 |
n2 | S2 |
n1 | L2 |
The first four notes of the melody are n1-n1-n5-n5, all short durations.
Using the above table these notes would be notated as follows.
If n1 is assigned to Line 1, then the remaining notes are assigned as follows.
Note | Line or Space |
n6 |
S3 |
n5 | L3 |
n4 | S2 |
n3 | L2 |
n2 | S1 |
n1 | L1 |
The first four notes of the melody are n1-n1-n5-n5, all short durations.
Using the above table these notes would be notated as follows.
If n1 is assigned to Space 1, then the remaining notes are assigned as follows.
Note | Line or Space |

L4 |
n5 | S3 |
n4 | L3 |
n3 | S2 |
n2 | L2 |
