CLOUD DETECTION

SCIENCE OBJECTIVE:  By measuring the temperature of the sky the presence of clouds can be detected. A clear sky will have

a significantly lower temperature than one containing clouds.  This information can be useful for automated control of telescopes.

INSTRUMENT DESCRIPTION:  The cloud temperature sensor consists of an infrared thermocouple thermometer with a narrow

field of view.  It is part of the video pod and can be aimed anywhere in the sky to map the sky’s cloud cover.
