Political Economy of Latin America

This is a newer research program that emerges from my interest in economic reform and policy in Latin America. The first part of this research program has focused on large macro analyses of the political and economic determinants of foreign direct investment in the region. This was the focus of my most recently published study in the research program:

Macroeconomic Deeds, Not Reform Words: The Determinants of Foreign Direct Investment in Latin America. Latin American Research Review 43:1 (2008).

Presently, I am working on a similar study that focuses on the determinants of portfolio investment flows and credit ratings in the region.

I have maintained an interest in the politics of privatization for some time. Here is a piece I published several years ago on the subject.

State Interests and the New Industrial Policy in Brazil: The Privatization of Steel, 1990-1994." Journal of Interamerican Studies and World Affairs 40:3 (Autumn 1998).
